Islamabad, December 24, 2025 – The long-awaited Shaheen Chowk underpass in Islamabad is set to be inaugurated next week, following an inspection by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, who emphasized the project’s timely completion.
The underpass, which connects 9th Avenue with Khyaban-i-Iqbal (Margalla Road), aims to significantly reduce traffic congestion in one of the city’s busiest areas. The foundation stone for the project was laid by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on October 24, and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has fast-tracked construction to ensure early completion.
During his visit, Minister Naqvi was briefed by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa, who confirmed that structural work has been completed, with only final road and finishing touches pending. The Minister highlighted that the project will provide considerable benefits to the public by easing traffic flow across the city.
Originally valued at Rs 1.3 billion, the project’s scope was later expanded, increasing costs by 15% due to enhancements, including extending the underpass barrel from 56 meters to 85 meters along with other minor design modifications.
The Shaheen Chowk underpass, once operational, is expected to relieve heavy traffic loads that have long plagued commuters in this area, offering a smoother and faster transit route across Islamabad.
